LONDON — The forthcoming Star Wars novel, Lords of the Sith, due out at the end of next month, will include a lesbian character — the first to appear in the series.
Series Editor Shelly Shapiro, who works for UK-based science fiction and fantasy publisher Del Rey, told Big Shiny Robot there should be diversity in Star Wars.
"This is certainly the first character in canon," Shapiro told the site.
"But there was a gay Mandalorian couple, so it's not brand new. It's
not something I really think about, it just makes sense. There's a lot
of diversity–there should be diversity in Star Wars.
You have all these different species and it would be silly to not also recognize that there's a lot of diversity in humans.
If there's any message at all, it's simply that Star Wars is as diverse
(or more so because they have alien species) as humanity is in real
life and we don't want to pretend it's not. It just felt perfectly
natural."
The book, which is due out April 28, takes place in the time frame between Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars Rebels.
According to the Star Wars wiki
the novel takes place after the Emperor and his apprentice, Darth
Vader, find themselves stranded in the middle of insurgent action on an
inhospitable planet. They are left to rely on each other, the Force, and
their own ruthlessness to prevail.
Author Paul S Kemp confirmed the news on Twitter, saying
the character's name is Delian Mors. In a series of tweets, he wrote
more about it and addressed fans of the series who were not happy with
the introduction of the new character.
